In Desperate Need of Development

This area of the Northeastern Serengeti plains has been hit very hard by the failure of rains in recent years. Both wildlife and cattle are dying in numbers not seen since the mid 1970's. Many men have had to leave their families to fend for themselves and take their livestock as far as 100 miles to the North looking for better pastures. Beyond immediate aid, it is critical that long term sustainable development be brought to this area or thousands of people will face starvation over the next few years.

Investment instead of Aid

Billions of aid dollars have been spent in Africa in an attempt to relieve the many ills that face the people who live in this magnificent land. However, after all is said and done, little true progress has been made in improving the daily lives at the individual village level in the rural areas. There are many possible explanations, but the bottom line is that the money simply does not get far enough afield to have an effect. While Gnu Holdings was formed to bring a model of investment rather than aid to better the lives of the people and communities the collapse of the global economy has put an end to our current efforts. We will continue to fund small development projects such as water wells as we find interested investors, but our larger plans to make real differences in the lives of these people are currently on hold until the economic situation improves.

A New Project

We are, however, just now starting a project to bring a much needed boarding facility to a small town nearby in Kenya. Due the the drought, many families have left school aged girls to live alone while they take their animals far to the North for food. These girls are exposed to sexual exploitation in the worst imaginable ways. We are raising money to begin construction of a boarding facility to provide safe housing for up to 100 girls while they attend school in the area.
